Etsy fees for Australian sellers — and the GST that shows up twice
Australia is one of the cheapest developed markets to sell from on paper: two processing rates like Canada, but no regulatory operating fee on top. The complication is GST, which reaches you twice — on what your buyers pay, and on the fees Etsy charges you.
The Australian fee stack in 2026
| Fee | Rate | Charged on |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | US$0.20 (about A$0.28) | Each listing, each extra unit sold, and each four-month renewal |
| Transaction fee | 6.5% | Item + shipping + gift wrap (excludes tax) |
| Payment processing — domestic | 3% + A$0.25 | Orders delivered within Australia, tax included |
| Payment processing — international | 4% + A$0.25 | Orders from anywhere else, tax included |
| Regulatory operating fee | None | Not charged to Australian shops |
| Offsite Ads | 15% or 12% | Attributed orders, capped at US$100 (about A$140) per order |
| Currency conversion | 2.5% | Only when your listing currency is not AUD |
| GST on Etsy's fees | 10% | Added to every fee unless Etsy has your GST ID or ABN |
The shape is close to Canada's — same two-tier processing table, same 6.5% transaction fee — with one important difference: there is no regulatory operating fee. On identical orders an Australian shop keeps roughly half a percentage point more than a Canadian one.
Domestic versus international, on real numbers
The same A$30 item with free shipping, no sales tax, single quantity, no advertising:
| Order | Listing | Transaction | Processing | Total fees | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buyer in Australia | A$0.28 | A$1.95 | A$1.15 | A$3.38 | A$26.62 |
| Buyer anywhere else | A$0.28 | A$1.95 | A$1.45 | A$3.68 | A$26.32 |
Thirty cents on an A$30 order — the effective rate moves from 11.3% to 12.3% purely on where the buyer lives. Most Australian Etsy shops sell mainly to the United States and Europe, so plan your pricing around the 4% line, not the 3% one. (For comparison: a Canadian seller pays 11.8% and 12.8% on the same orders, because Canada stacks a 0.50% regulatory fee on top.)
A fuller example, with shipping
Sell one item for A$35 with A$7 shipping to a buyer in Melbourne, so the order total is A$42. No sales tax, no advertising:
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Order total | A$42.00 |
| Listing fee | − A$0.28 |
| Transaction fee (6.5% of A$42.00) | − A$2.73 |
| Payment processing (3% + A$0.25) | − A$1.51 |
| Total Etsy fees | − A$4.52 |
| You keep | A$37.48 |
Etsy takes 10.8% of the order — and note the shipping was not exempt from any of it: the A$7 sat inside the base for both the transaction fee and the processing fee.
GST: the two places it touches you
1. GST on sales to Australian buyers. Since 1 July 2019, Etsy automatically collects 10% GST at checkout on physical goods valued at A$1,000 or less that are imported into Australia, and remits it to the ATO. The tax is never your revenue — it passes through Etsy — but the payment processing fee still applies to the tax-inclusive amount, which is why processing on a taxed order looks higher than expected. Orders shipped within Australia, and consignments above A$1,000, are outside this automatic collection.
2. GST on Etsy's fees. Without a GST ID on file, every fee in the table above carries an extra 10%. With one on file, Etsy invoices the fees GST-free and you handle GST on your side of the relationship. Registration is only mandatory once your turnover passes A$75,000, but the GST-on-fees line starts from your very first sale — which is one more reason to hand Etsy your ABN early if you have one.
Quick answers
Is there really no regulatory operating fee in Australia?
Really no. As of late 2026 Etsy charges it only to shops with bank accounts in countries including the UK (0.48%), Canada (0.50%), France (1.14%), Italy (0.80%), Spain (0.88%), Hungary, India, Türkiye and Vietnam. Australia is absent from the list — one of the structural reasons Australian shops keep slightly more than British or Canadian ones on identical sales.
Does the listing fee change with quantity?
Yes. Sell three units in one order and you pay three listing fees — about A$0.84 rather than A$0.28. It is the most commonly missed line on low-price, high-volume listings.
What is the Offsite Ads cap in Australian dollars?
US$100, which works out to roughly A$140 depending on the exchange rate. Etsy sets the cap in US dollars, so the figure in your own currency moves.
Should I list in AUD or USD?
List in the currency your buyers use, and let your bank account be AUD. If your listing currency differs from your payout currency, Etsy takes 2.5% of every sale in conversion fees — on an A$30 order that is A$0.75, more than double the listing fee.
How do I check my own numbers?
Use the fee calculator, select Australia, and switch on Buyer is outside my country for overseas orders — it applies the 4% + A$0.25 rate automatically. If you refund orders, read which fees come back on a refund.
Rates last verified October 2026 against Etsy's published fee pages, including the regulatory-fee country list as of September 2026. GST treatment depends on your registration status — this page is general information, not tax advice. Confirm your position with the ATO or a registered tax agent, and check Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy before pricing. The A$ figures for fees Etsy sets in US dollars move with the exchange rate.
