Etsy fees for German sellers — and the 19% most calculators get wrong

Germany has the second-lowest fee bill in the eurozone: no regulatory fee, and the ordinary European processing rate. What actually costs German sellers more is a tax line that has nothing to do with the order — 19% VAT charged on Etsy's own fees.

Offsite Ads15% or 12%The whole order, capped at US$100 (about €87) per order

Etsy bills the listing fee in US dollars and converts it, so the euro figure moves a little with the exchange rate. The 6.5% transaction fee is the same everywhere; only processing, the regulatory fee and the VAT on fees vary by country.

Germany pays no regulatory operating fee. This is the fact most pages about German Etsy fees get wrong. The fee exists in nine countries only — Canada 0.50%, France 1.14%, Hungary 1.97%, India 0.05%, Italy 0.80%, Spain 0.88%, Türkiye 1.67%, the UK 0.48% and Vietnam 1.24% — and Germany is not one of them. A calculator that adds 0.29% for a German shop has taken India's pre-June-2026 rate and attached it to the wrong country.

What a real German order costs

A €22.00 item with €4.50 shipping, sold by a seller who has not given Etsy a VAT ID and is not running ads:

LineAmount% of order
The buyer pays€26.50100%
Listing fee− €0.180.7%
Transaction fee (6.5%)− €1.726.5%
Payment processing (4% + €0.30)− €1.365.1%
VAT on Etsy's fees (19%)− €0.622.3%
Total Etsy fees− €3.8814.6%
You keep€22.6285.4%

Take €7.00 of materials and €3.50 for the shipping label out of that, and the order is worth €12.12. If the buyer arrived through an Offsite Ad, the 15% fee adds €3.98 plus €0.76 of VAT on it, and the same order drops to €7.38. That single click is the difference between a good month and a break-even one.

The 19% line: VAT on Etsy's own fees

Etsy is required to charge German VAT on the fees it charges you. It is tax on the fee, not on the sale, and it is calculated on the total of every fee line above — which is why a seller who thinks their fee rate is “about 11%” is really paying closer to 13%.

There is one switch that changes it. If you add a valid USt-IdNr. to your Etsy shop, Etsy stops charging the VAT: from the first of the following month you receive an invoice stating that no VAT was charged. You then account for the tax yourself under the reverse-charge rules — a line in your UStVA — and, if you are a VAT-registered business, deduct it in the same return. The VAT-on-fees guide explains the mechanics; what matters for pricing is the cash flow:

SituationEtsy feesYou keepEffective rate
No VAT ID (e.g. Kleinunternehmer)€3.88€22.6214.6%
VAT ID submitted€3.26€23.2412.3%
VAT ID, and your price includes 19% VAT on the sale€3.26€19.0112.3%
VAT ID, price includes VAT, Offsite Ads order€7.24€15.0327.3%

Read the last two rows together. The fee rate does not change when you register for VAT — the money you keep does, because a fifth of the price was never yours. Both of those effects are easy to miss in a spreadsheet that treats the buyer's payment as revenue.

Small orders carry the fixed fees

€0.18 plus €0.30 is €0.48 before a single percentage is applied. On a €10 item that is nearly 5% of the order on its own, which is why the effective rate falls as the price rises:

Item priceTotal Etsy feesYou keepEffective rate
€10€1.82€8.1818.2%
€25€3.70€21.3014.8%
€50€6.82€43.1813.6%
€100€13.07€86.9313.1%

The practical reading: German sellers of small items — stickers, cards, single prints — are paying an effective rate five points higher than sellers of large ones, on identical terms. That is not a reason to avoid small items, but it is a reason not to price them with the same 13% rule of thumb.

Kleinunternehmer: what §19 changes, and what it does not

Under the Kleinunternehmerregelung (§19 UStG) you do not charge VAT on your sales and you do not file VAT returns — but you also cannot deduct input VAT, and that includes the 19% Etsy charges on its own fees. For a small German shop the VAT on fees is therefore a permanent cost, not a timing difference.

The thresholds, unchanged since January 2025 and in force for 2026: total turnover of €25,000 or less in the previous calendar year, and €100,000 or less in the current one. In your first year the hard limit is €25,000. Cross €100,000 mid-year and the exemption ends from that invoice onward, not from the following January.

The trade-off worth doing the arithmetic on. A €2,000-a-month shop pays roughly €500 a year in VAT on Etsy fees alone. Whether registering is worth that depends on how much input VAT you have on materials, and on what the paperwork costs you — a question for a Steuerberater, not for a calculator. What this page can tell you is the size of the number you are deciding about.

Germany against its neighbours

The same €100 order, no ads, no VAT ID, in four markets:

Seller countryRegulatory feeTotal Etsy feesYou keep
Germany0%€13.07€86.93
Netherlands0%€13.29€86.71
France1.14%€14.54€85.46
Italy0.80%€14.37€85.63

The gap between Germany and France is €1.47 on the same order, almost all of it the French regulatory fee and the VAT charged on that fee. The EU guide covers the six VAT rates, and the regulatory fee page tracks the rates Etsy reset on 22 June 2026.

Quick answers

Do I charge VAT to buyers as a German Etsy seller?

If you are VAT-registered, yes — 19% on domestic sales, and the EU distance-selling rules apply once you pass the €10,000 cross-border threshold. If you are a Kleinunternehmer you charge none and must not show any VAT on your invoices.

Does Etsy collect VAT on my behalf?

For cross-border sales to EU consumers Etsy can be treated as the supplier and collect the VAT itself, depending on the goods and the destination. That is separate from the VAT on Etsy's fees described above, which is charged to you on Etsy's invoice.

Why did my fee total jump after June 2026?

If you sell from Germany it should not have. The 22 June 2026 changes touched the regulatory operating fee in France, Italy, Spain, Hungary, India and Türkiye — Germany's line stayed at zero, so any jump in your German fee bill points to Offsite Ads, currency conversion or a change in order mix instead.

Where do I check my own numbers?

Use the fee calculator: pick Germany, enter the price and shipping, and it applies 4% + €0.30, no regulatory fee, and 19% VAT on the fees — with a switch for the case where you have submitted a VAT ID.
