VAT on Etsy fees — the tax Etsy charges on its own charges

Outside the United States, Etsy adds local VAT to the fees it takes from you. Not to what your buyer pays — to Etsy's own cut. It is a tax on a cost, it is easy to miss, and in most countries one field in your shop settings turns it off.

What is actually being taxed

A sale has two separate tax questions, and sellers routinely merge them:

  • VAT on what you sell. Whether your buyer pays VAT depends on the goods, the destination and who is deemed the supplier. Sometimes Etsy collects it, sometimes you do.
  • VAT on what Etsy charges you. This is a business-to-business service invoice. Etsy charges tax on its own fee, and that tax lands on your payment account.

This page is about the second one. Take a €100 order from a German seller with no VAT ID on file:

LineAmount
Listing fee€0.18
Transaction fee (6.5%)€6.50
Payment processing (4% + €0.30)€4.30
Subtotal — Etsy's cut€10.98
VAT at 19% on that subtotal€2.09
Total taken by Etsy€13.07

The 19% is not charged on €100. It is charged on €10.98 — the fee. Which produces the mildly absurd result that a tax designed to be neutral ends up as 2.1% of the order, paid by the seller, and invisible in Etsy's headline fee percentages.

Why it compounds. The VAT is calculated on the total of every fee, including Offsite Ads. An Offsite Ads order more than doubles the fee subtotal, so it more than doubles the VAT line with it. On the same €100 order with a 15% ad fee, the fee subtotal rises from €10.98 to €25.98 and the VAT from €2.09 to €4.94.

Where a VAT ID switches it off — and where it cannot

Etsy splits seller countries into two groups. This is from Etsy's own help article on how VAT is collected on seller fees, checked in October 2026:

A valid VAT ID stops the chargeCharged regardless of VAT ID
Australia, Chile, Colombia, Egypt, the EU except Ireland, Georgia, India, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Morocco, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Tanzania, Thailand, Türkiye, the UK, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, Serbia, South Africa, Russia, Switzerland, Vietnam

Canada sits in its own category: Etsy charges GST, HST, PST, RST or QST depending on your tax status and the province, and publishes no single rate.

Two things follow. First, Ireland is the trap inside the EU — an Irish seller pays 23% on Etsy's fees and no setting removes it, which is why Irish fee totals sit above every other eurozone country. Second, if you sell from one of the countries in the right-hand column, this is a permanent line in your cost base and the only lever you have is pricing.

What the tax actually costs, by country

Etsy publishes the country groups but not the percentages. The rates below are the standard national rates that apply to a business-to-business digital service — which is what Etsy's fee invoice is — applied to a €100 or local-currency equivalent order with no advertising:

Seller countryRate on Etsy's feesFees before taxTax on feesTotal
United StatesNone$9.95—$9.95
Australia10% GSTA$10.03A$1.00A$11.03
Canada5% GST (floor)C$10.53C$0.53C$11.06
Germany19%€10.98€2.09€13.07
Netherlands21%€10.98€2.31€13.29
Ireland23%€10.98€2.53€13.51
United Kingdom20%£11.34£2.27£13.61

Italy22%€11.78€2.59€14.37
France20%€12.12€2.42€14.54

The differences between the eurozone rows are two effects stacked: the regulatory operating fee (France, Italy and Spain charge one; Germany, the Netherlands and Ireland do not) and the VAT rate on top of it.

Submitting a VAT ID: what changes

Add a valid VAT ID to your Etsy shop and, from the following month, Etsy stops charging VAT on its fees. You do not get a refund of what was already charged — the change is forward-looking — and you start receiving an invoice on the first of each month stating that no VAT was charged.

That invoice is not the end of it. Under the reverse-charge mechanism you are now the party accounting for the tax: you declare the VAT on the fee in your own return and, if you have full deduction rights, deduct the same amount in the same period. Net effect for a fully taxable business: zero. Net effect for a business without deduction rights: you pay the same tax as before, only through your own return instead of Etsy's invoice.

The practical version. If you are VAT-registered, submitting your VAT ID improves cash flow — the tax stops leaving your Etsy balance and becomes a line in a return you were filing anyway. If you are not registered, there is nothing to submit and nothing to reclaim; the VAT stays a cost, and the only thing you can change is the price.

If you cannot reclaim it, price for it

For a shop under a small-business exemption — a German Kleinunternehmer, an Irish seller, anyone below their registration threshold — the VAT on fees is money that never comes back. It is small per order and noticeable per year:

Monthly Etsy revenueVAT on fees at 19% (approx.)Per year
€500€10€125
€2,000€42€502
€5,000€104€1,254

These assume the whole revenue is Etsy orders with no advertising and no Offsite Ads. The number is not large enough to restructure a business around, but it is large enough that a pricing rule which quietly ignores it — the common “add 13% and hope” — leaves a shop permanently a couple of points short.

Quick answers

Is VAT on Etsy fees the same as VAT on my sales?

No. VAT on your sales is collected from the buyer and belongs to the tax authority. VAT on Etsy's fees is collected from you, on Etsy's income, and whether you can recover it depends on your own registration.

Does it apply to Offsite Ads fees too?

Yes. The VAT is charged on the total of all fee lines, so an ad-attributed order carries VAT on the ad fee as well as on the standard fees.

Do US sellers pay it?

No. Etsy does not charge US sales tax on its own seller fees. That is part of why a US fee bill looks structurally cheaper than a European one even before the regulatory fee is counted.

Where do I see what I was charged?

Your Payment account shows the monthly charges, and the invoice on the first of the month itemises the VAT-eligible fees and the tax applied. The fee calculator has a switch for VAT on fees so you can model both cases before you price anything.
