Etsy profit calculator — what you actually keep after every fee

Put in your price, materials, shipping and any ad click, and see your real profit, profit margin and markup. The calculator grades each listing A–F and shows the break-even price — so you know before you list whether the sale is worth having.

YOUR LISTING

Payment processing and the regulatory operating fee differ by country. The 6.5% transaction fee is the same everywhere.
Tax is collected on the buyer's behalf. Etsy still charges processing on it.
No VAT is added to Etsy prices in this country for domestic sellers.
Every extra unit on a multi-quantity listing costs another listing fee.
Sale came from Offsite Ads Charged on the whole order total, capped per order
Payout in a different currency Etsy adds a 2.5% currency conversion fee on the converted amount
Include Etsy Plus $10/month subscription, amortised over 30 orders

What the profit calculator shows

Most "Etsy fee calculators" stop at the fees. This one goes one step further and subtracts your material cost, because a sale that clears Etsy's fees can still lose you money. For the price you enter it shows:

OutputWhat it means
Net profitWhat lands in your pocket after every Etsy fee and your material cost
Profit marginNet profit ÷ what the buyer pays — the number to quote
Markup on costNet profit ÷ your material cost — useful for sourcing decisions
Break-even priceThe floor: list below this and you sell at a loss
A–F gradeA quick read on whether the margin is healthy

Profit, margin and markup are not the same

Sellers mix these up constantly, and the confusion is where money leaks. On a $38 item that costs you $12 and carries $4.06 of Etsy fees:

MeasureValueFormula
Net profit$21.94$38 − $4.06 fees − $12 cost
Profit margin57.7%$21.94 ÷ $38
Markup on cost183%$21.94 ÷ $12
Quote margin, not markup. When you say "I make 50%", buyers and your own books mean 50% of the sale price. That is a 100% markup on cost — a very different number. The calculator reports margin because that is what "what you keep" actually means.

The A–F margin grade

The grade is a fast sanity check on the net margin after all fees and cost:

GradeNet marginRead
A45% and upExcellent — room to absorb a return, a discount or a shipping upgrade
B30–45%Healthy — the target zone for most handmade shops
C15–30%Thin — one refund or one ad click wipes out the profit
D0–15%At risk — a discount or a promoted click puts you underwater
Fbelow 0Selling at a loss — raise the price or cut the cost

Break-even: the price you must clear

The break-even price is where your payout exactly equals your material cost — Etsy's fees eat the entire sale and you break even on the item. Below it you lose money on every order. The calculator prints this figure for your inputs; treat it as the absolute floor, never the target. A shop that prices at break-even is doing all the work for the platform.

Worked example: $38 item, $12 cost, US seller

Organic saleOffsite Ads 15%
Listing + transaction + processing$4.06$4.06
Offsite Ads—$5.70
Total Etsy fees$4.06$9.76
Net profit (after $12 cost)$21.94$16.24
Net margin57.7%42.7%

The same listing, the same cost — one attributed ad click removes almost 15 points of margin. That is the test for whether an Offsite Ads order is worth having: if your organic margin is already under about 20%, the ad version is close to working for free. See the Offsite Ads page for the full rules and the opt-out threshold.

Healthy margins by category

These are typical net margins after Etsy's fees, not before. They assume you are pricing to cover the platform's ~10% organic bite (and ideally its 15% ad bite too). If you are still setting prices, work back from a target margin rather than a multiplier:

CategoryTypical net marginWhy
Handmade jewellery45–55%High perceived value on small, low-shipping items
Art prints & wall decor55–65%Reproductions scale; material cost is a small share
Digital downloads65–80%No material or shipping cost at all
Home & living (handmade)40–50%Larger, heavier items carry more shipping
Clothing & accessories45–55%Competitive, but fabric cost is modest
Vintage & craft supplies30–40%Sourced cost is a larger share of the price

If your number from the calculator sits well below your category's band, the price is too low or the cost is too high — not the fees. Etsy's cut is the same for everyone; the margin is yours to set.

Quick answers

How do I calculate my profit on an Etsy sale?

Take the buyer's payment, subtract every Etsy fee and then your material cost. The calculator above does this for your country and prints the profit, margin, markup and break-even price together.

Does free shipping change my profit?

No — Etsy charges fees on the order total whether postage is a separate line or folded into the price, so profit is identical either way — the shipping calculator shows both cases side by side. Free shipping is a buyerPsychology and search-ranking choice, not a profit lever. See the shipping calculator.

Should I price for the organic rate or the Offsite Ads rate?

If a meaningful share of orders arrive through Etsy's ads, price so the 15% version still clears your target margin. Pricing only for the organic rate and hoping the ads never fire is how sellers end up selling at a loss on their best-traffic orders.
